What is Premail?

Premail is a private, local-first desktop app that keeps unwanted email out of your inbox automatically. Running quietly in the background on Mac, Windows, and Linux, Premail monitors your Gmail, Outlook, and iCloud accounts and handles incoming messages according to rules you control. It works alongside the email client you already use, including Apple Mail, Gmail, Outlook, Thunderbird, Spark, and Superhuman. There is no new inbox to manage, no browser extension, and no Premail account required. Premail uses AI classification to understand the content and intent of incoming email, making it possible to create rules in plain English. You can tell it to archive recruiter messages, trash cold sales pitches, file receipts, quarantine suspicious mail, or route specific messages to folders. Each rule has an adjustable confidence threshold, and every action is recorded so you can see what happened and why. New accounts begin in Learning Mode, where Premail classifies messages and shows what it would do without changing anything. Once you are comfortable with the results, you can enable Live Mode and let it act automatically. Privacy is central to how Premail is built. Your credentials, rules, settings, and activity history remain on your computer. You can run AI entirely locally with Ollama or bring your own OpenAI or Anthropic API key. Cloud AI requests travel directly from your computer to the provider and never pass through Premail servers. Premail gives you one set of intelligent rules across every inbox, so the email that reaches you is the email that actually deserves your attention.
