SEO vs GEO for startups: what actually overlaps

Founders hear “optimize for AI search” as if it were a separate product. In practice, the durable overlap is still: be crawlable, credible, and worth linking to.

    Key takeaways

    • SEO = rankings and crawlable authority on the open web
    • GEO = showing up in AI answers (Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, etc.)
    • Google has said generative Search still leans on core ranking systems
    • Credible sources beat spam directories for AI citation preference
    • A strong directory listing supports SEO (and thus GEO foundations). It is not a citation guarantee

    What SEO still means

Classic SEO is about whether people and crawlers can find, understand, and trust your pages: technical health, content that answers real queries, and links from sites that are not spam. A dofollow from a reviewed DR 80+ directory can contribute to that link graph. A hundred low-quality directory dumps usually cannot.

    What GEO usually means

GEO (generative engine optimization) is shorthand for visibility inside AI answers: Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT browsing or training-adjacent retrieval, Perplexity, and similar surfaces. Those systems prefer sources that look like brands and publishers, not unlimited submit farms. They also change quickly; there is no stable “GEO backlink” product that guarantees a citation.

    Where they honestly overlap

Google has described generative Search features as relying on the same core ranking systems as classic Search. So improving crawlability, clarity, and authority helps you compete for Overview retrieval. Separately, ChatGPT and Perplexity still lean toward credible entities. A clean listing on a reviewed startup directory can support your brand as a real company on the web. It does not buy an AI Overview slot.

On startupfa.me itself, referrers from Aug 16 to Sep 15, 2026 include both Google and ChatGPT — useful as an inbound discovery signal, not as a promise that your listing will be cited.

How Startup Fame talks about this

We sell reviewed placement and a dofollow from a high-authority directory: an SEO foundation that can support AI-search visibility over time. We do not claim your listing guarantees a ChatGPT or AI Overview citation. For the anti-spam side of directory links, read the bulk submit guide.
